A Kashmir 5-day itinerary usually bases in Srinagar and runs day trips out: Gulmarg for the gondola, Pahalgam for the valley, and Srinagar itself for the Mughal gardens, Dal Lake and a houseboat night. Doonga and Sonmarg are the common additions when a sixth day exists.
Kashmir rewards a plan built around drive times rather than distances. Gulmarg and Pahalgam are each a half-day's drive from Srinagar, so a five-day trip that bases centrally and radiates outward sees more than one that relocates nightly. The day-by-day plan

Arrive Srinagar, Dal Lake and the gardens
Fly in and go gently — Srinagar sits high enough that a slow first day is sensible. The Mughal gardens in the afternoon and a shikara ride on Dal Lake at sunset, which is the classic first evening and genuinely worth it.

Gulmarg: the gondola and the meadows
A two-hour drive each way, so start early. The gondola runs in two stages, with the upper stage weather-dependent and frequently closed in poor visibility. In winter this is the ski day; in summer it is meadows and horse rides.

Pahalgam and the Lidder valley
Another early start for a two-to-three-hour drive. Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari are the standard stops, generally by local taxi from Pahalgam since private cars are restricted on some stretches. Return to Srinagar in the evening.

Houseboat night and the old city
Slow morning, the old city's shrines and craft workshops, and a night on a Dal Lake houseboat. Standards vary hugely between houseboats — this is one place where the specific property matters far more than the category.

Sonmarg, or shopping and fly out
If your flight is late and the road is open, Sonmarg is a long but spectacular day trip. Otherwise a morning for Kashmiri crafts — pashmina, walnut wood, saffron — and the airport, where security checks take longer than most domestic terminals.
When is the best time to go?
March to October covers the tulip season, the summer meadows and the autumn chinars. December to February is snow and skiing at Gulmarg, with some mountain roads closed. Each season is a genuinely different trip rather than a better or worse one.

Practical tips before you book
- Layers matter even in summer — Gulmarg and Sonmarg are far colder than Srinagar
- The upper gondola stage closes for weather with little warning; treat it as a bonus, not the plan
- Buy pashmina and saffron from established stores and ask for the bill — the roadside price is rarely the bargain it looks
