A five-night Thailand itinerary works best as two bases: three nights in Phuket for beaches and the Phi Phi day trip, then two nights in Krabi for Railay and the Four Islands. The two are linked by ferry or road, so plan the transfer as its own half-day.
Phuket and Krabi are the pairing that makes a short Thailand beach trip worth the flight — similar seas, quite different characters. Phuket is developed, busy and easy; Krabi is quieter, more dramatic, and slower to move around. Five nights is enough for both provided you accept one travel day between them.

Arrive in Phuket, beach evening
Land, transfer to your beach — Patong for nightlife, Kata or Karon for quieter sand — and let the first evening be dinner and the sea. Transfers from Phuket airport run long to the southern beaches, so factor an hour or more.

Phi Phi islands by speedboat
The day most people come for: Maya Bay, snorkelling stops and lunch on the water. Take the earliest departure your operator offers, because the bays fill through the morning and the sea gets choppier in the afternoon.

Phuket at your own pace, or Phang Nga Bay
Either a slow beach and old-town day — Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese streets are genuinely worth a morning — or a second boat day to Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts by longtail or canoe. Do not attempt both.

Transfer to Krabi, evening at Ao Nang
Ferry or road transfer across, arriving early afternoon. Settle at Ao Nang, walk the strip, eat by the water. Treat this as a travel day and plan nothing that starts before you arrive — ferries move with the weather.

Four Islands tour or Railay Beach
The Four Islands longtail tour covers Poda, Chicken Island and the tidal sandbar; alternatively spend the day at Railay, reachable only by boat and worth it for the cliffs. Both are half to full days from Ao Nang.
When is the best time to go?
November to April is the dry season on this coast and the reliable window. May to October brings monsoon rain and rougher seas, which affects boat trips more than beach time — island tours get cancelled at short notice.
