Sri Lanka 5-day itinerary for Indian travellers

A five-day Sri Lanka itinerary should pick one line through the island rather than a loop: Colombo or Negombo, up to Kandy, on to the hill country by train, then down to the southern coast. Attempting the cultural triangle as well in five days means a trip spent on the road.
Sri Lanka is small on a map and slow on the ground — mountain roads and single-track railways mean a hundred kilometres can take four hours. Five days is genuinely enough for a memorable trip only if you resist adding Sigiriya and Anuradhapura to a plan that already includes the hills and the coast. This route is the honest version.
The day-by-day plan

Arrive, and on to Kandy
Land at Colombo and travel inland to Kandy, roughly three to four hours depending on traffic. Evening at the Temple of the Tooth for the ceremony, then the lake. Keep expectations for day one modest — the drive is the day.

Kandy, then the hill-country train to Ella
The train from Kandy through the tea country is the single best thing on this itinerary and one of the great rail journeys anywhere. Book reserved seats well ahead; the unreserved carriages are standing room. Arrive Ella late afternoon.

Ella: Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, tea
An early walk to Little Adam's Peak before the heat, the Nine Arch Bridge timed to a train crossing, and a tea factory tour in the afternoon. Ella is compact and walkable, which after two travel days is a relief.

Down to the south coast
Travel south to the coast — Mirissa, Unawatuna or Galle — a three-to-four-hour run out of the hills. Afternoon on the beach and sunset at Galle Fort if you have based yourself near it.

Coast, Galle Fort, and the airport run
Whale watching from Mirissa in season if you are up before dawn, otherwise a slow beach morning and the Dutch-colonial ramparts of Galle Fort. Then the coastal expressway back to Colombo airport, which is faster than the map suggests.
When is the best time to go?
Sri Lanka has two monsoons hitting different coasts, so there is no single bad season — December to March suits the south and west used by this route, while the east coast runs opposite. Whale watching from the south is seasonal; check the months before promising it to anyone.

Practical tips before you book
- Book the Kandy–Ella train seats as early as you can — this is the one thing that sells out

- Roads in the hills are winding; anyone prone to travel sickness should take the train legs where possible
