Schengen visa for Indians in 2026

Last updated 2026-07-22 · every rule below is sourced and dated

A Schengen visa for Indians is a short-stay visa covering 29 European countries. Since 18 April 2024 a special EU “cascade” regime applies to Indian applicants: use two visas lawfully within three years and you can be issued a two-year multi-entry visa, normally followed by a five-year one if your passport allows.

Most Indian travellers still apply trip by trip, unaware the rules changed. This page explains the cascade exactly as the EU wrote it, what it does and does not promise, and how to put a file together that actually earns the longer visa — with every figure traced to an official source and dated, because a visa page that guesses is worse than no page at all.

What changed: the EU cascade regime for Indian nationals

  • On 18 April 2024 the European Commission adopted specific rules on issuing multiple-entry visas to Indian nationals — more favourable than the standard Visa Code rules that applied until then.

  • Indian nationals can be issued long-term multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.

  • The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining.

  • During the validity period of these visas, holders enjoy travel rights equivalent to visa-free nationals — within the 90-days-in-any-180 short-stay limit.

  • The Schengen area covers 29 European countries. A short-stay (Type C) visa issued by one of them is generally valid across all of them.

Who qualifies for the 2-year and 5-year Schengen visa?

The cascade rewards a record, not a plan. Two conditions carry it:

  1. Two visas, lawfully used, in three years. Indian nationals can be issued long-term multi-entry Schengen visas valid for two years after having obtained and lawfully used two visas within the previous three years.
  2. Then the five-year step. The two-year visa will normally be followed by a five-year visa, if the passport has sufficient validity remaining.

Two honest caveats. The regime applies to Indian nationals resident in India applying in India — an Indian passport holder living in the Gulf is normally assessed under the rules of their country of residence. And eligibility is not entitlement: the consulate still decides. What you control is whether your file makes the qualification obvious.

How much does a Schengen visa cost for Indians?

The standard short-stay (Type C) consular fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–11, with under-6s exempt — the level set centrally by the European Commission and unchanged since 11 June 2024.

The consular fee is NOT the whole cost. Visa application centres (VFS Global, BLS, TLScontact) charge their own service fee on top, and courier, biometrics and mandatory travel insurance are separate again. These vary by consulate and change — we do not publish a single number for them.

The Visa Code baseline is a decision within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable in individual cases. In practice the appointment wait — not the decision — is the long pole in Indian peak season, and it differs by consulate and city.

What documents are required for a Schengen visa from India?

Requirements are set per consulate. This is the standing core — always reconcile it against the checklist your destination consulate publishes.

  • Passport valid at least three months beyond your intended departure from the Schengen area, with blank pages
  • Completed application form and a recent photo to the Schengen specification
  • Travel medical insurance meeting the Schengen minimum coverage requirement, valid across the whole area for your whole stay
  • Round-trip travel reservation and accommodation for the full stay
  • Proof of funds — typically recent bank statements, plus income proof
  • Proof of purpose: leave letter and employment proof, business invitation, or a host's invitation
  • Proof of ties to India — the piece most refusals actually turn on
  • For the cascade: copies of your prior Schengen visas and the stamps or EES record showing you used them lawfully

How to apply for a Schengen visa from India, step by step

  1. 1

Work out which consulate is yours

Main destination decides. Most Schengen states in India accept applications through a visa application centre (VFS Global, BLS or TLScontact) rather than at the mission itself.

  2. 2

Book the appointment before you book the trip

In peak season the appointment slot is the real constraint. Secure it first, then build travel dates around it — never the other way round.

  3. 3

Build the file, then check it against the consulate's own list

Use the core documents below as your base, then reconcile against the published checklist for your specific consulate. They differ, and the consulate's list wins.

  4. 4

Ask for the multi-entry visa explicitly

If you qualify under the cascade, say so in the cover letter and put the prior visa copies and travel history where the officer will see them. Eligibility that is not evidenced is eligibility that gets overlooked.

  5. 5

    Attend biometrics and submit

Fingerprints and photo are captured at the centre unless you have valid biometrics on file from a recent application.

  6. 6

Track, collect, and check the sticker

When it is issued, verify the validity dates, the number of entries and the duration of stay printed on the sticker before you travel. Errors happen and are far easier to fix before departure.

EES and ETIAS: what actually applies to an Indian passport

The EU Entry/Exit System (EES) was rolled out progressively from 12 October 2025 and is fully operational at Schengen external borders from 10 April 2026. It records biometrics and entry/exit digitally in place of passport stamps.

France Diplomatie (French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs) · verified 2026-07-22

ETIAS is a travel authorisation for nationals who are visa-EXEMPT for the Schengen area. Indian passport holders are not visa-exempt, so ETIAS is not your route — you need a Schengen visa. As of July 2026 ETIAS is not yet operational, and no website can legitimately sell you one.

Why Schengen visas get refused for Indian applicants

  • Weak or unevidenced ties to India — the single most common reason
  • Funds that do not credibly cover the trip, or unexplained large deposits just before applying
  • Itinerary, bookings and stated purpose that do not match each other
  • Insurance that does not meet the coverage requirement or does not span the whole stay
  • Applying to the wrong consulate for your main destination
  • Gaps or inconsistencies between the form and the supporting documents
  • A previous overstay or breach — which the EES now records precisely

More questions, answered

How much does a Schengen visa cost for Indians?
The consular fee for a short-stay (Type C) visa is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged 6–11; under-6s are exempt. That is the centrally set European Commission fee, unchanged since 11 June 2024. It is not the whole cost — the visa application centre (VFS, BLS, TLScontact) charges its own service fee, and insurance, biometrics and courier are separate. Those vary by consulate and change, so confirm the current total on your destination consulate's own page before you pay.
Who qualifies for the 5-year Schengen visa under the cascade rules?
The cascade is sequential, not automatic. You become eligible to be issued a two-year multi-entry visa after having obtained and lawfully used two Schengen visas in the previous three years. That two-year visa is then normally followed by a five-year one, provided your passport has enough validity left. “Lawfully used” is the load-bearing phrase: you travelled on the visa and respected its conditions and the 90-in-180 limit.
Does the cascade guarantee I will get a long-validity visa?
No, and any agent who promises one is misleading you. The rules make you eligible to be issued a longer visa; the consulate still assesses your application and decides. A clean, well-documented file with your prior visas and travel history presented clearly is what converts eligibility into an actual multi-year sticker.
Do Indian passport holders need ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is for nationals who are visa-exempt for the Schengen area, and Indian passport holders are not — you need a Schengen visa. As of July 2026 ETIAS is not operational anyway, and no website can legitimately sell you one. Treat any site offering an Indian traveller an “ETIAS” as a scam.
What is the EES and does it affect my application?
The Entry/Exit System records biometrics and your entries and exits digitally instead of stamping your passport. It rolled out progressively from 12 October 2025 and has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026. It does not change how you apply — but it does mean your compliance history is recorded precisely, which matters directly to a regime that rewards visas you have “lawfully used”.
How long does a Schengen visa take to process from India?
The Visa Code baseline is a decision within 15 calendar days of an admissible application, extendable in individual cases. In Indian peak season the appointment wait, not the decision, is usually the long pole — and it differs by consulate and city. Check current appointment availability for your destination country before you commit to travel dates.
Which country should I apply to if I am visiting several?
Apply to the country of your main destination — where you will spend the most time. If your stay is split evenly, apply to the country you enter first. Getting this wrong is a common, avoidable reason for refusal.
